Regarding the many positions available in the front-end development department,
I just came to the conclusion that I would refer to myself as a website developer, with a strong emphasis on the website component of the title. This is due to how ambiguous nearly every other sentence is.
Consider the case of CSS developers as an illustration. Is familiarity with presentational JavaScript required for a job as a CSS developer?
Take, for instance, engineers who work with JavaScript. Does a JavaScript developer need to have a fundamental understanding of accessibility?
Consider the case of ux engineers as an illustration. Should a UX engineer have some familiarity with SEO?
Apply for employment as a web developer, full-stack developer, or front-end developer. There's no way for you to tell what these images may be suggesting. Simply said, these phrases cover much too much ground and make far too many assumptions.
From now on, I really am a web developer. That means I know about search engine optimization, accessibility, and the basics of domains. name systems, presentational JavaScript, HTML, CSS, the Open Graph Protocol, and other related topics. Basically, what I do is create websites. I'm not familiar with developing web-based applications and have stopped using JavaScript libraries.
Whether or not there is some form of technology running in the background is irrelevant to me. The fact that I am proficient in using platforms like WordPress, Hugo, Jekyll, Eleventy, Hexo, Shopify, HubSpot, and anything else is irrelevant. The fact that the end code should be the same is what really counts. The site's code has to be readable and understandable by humans, web browsers, screen readers, web spiders, and anybody else may come along. As a developer of websites, all that matters to me is that the websites I build are quick to load, well optimised, and simple to use.
It doesn't matter if I know how to use WordPress, Hugo, Jekyll, Eleventy, Hexo, Shopify, HubSpot, or any other platform well. businesses do a great job of explaining the roles they offer in great detail. On the other hand, there are other businesses that don't even specify which team is looking for new members. For instance, the duties and responsibilities of a front-end developer on the product team are very different from those of a member of the marketing team.
It's the year 2022, and we still don't have a method for differentiating between these responsibilities, so I suppose what I'm trying to say is that we don't have a system. Why is it so difficult to find a competent developer? Why do developers argue over the appropriate use of frameworks, whether they be CSS or JavaScript ones? Why do the wrong people get the wrong jobs? It's no surprise that we have so many poor-quality websites. No wonder it's difficult to find a decent developer.
I sincerely hope that this is just my perspective and that the truth is far more favourable. But alas, despite my best efforts, I can't shake the feeling that things are truly backwards and that the truth is much more disappointing.
